On a seemingly ordinary Saturday in January 2024, Billie Tranby-White's life took an unexpected turn. She spent the morning swimming and riding bikes with her mother, Grace, and twin sister, Lola. But as they drove home, Billie began complaining of a headache, and her mother noticed something was wrong. Her face had drooped, her speech was slurred, and she was slumped in her seat. Grace, acting swiftly, called an ambulance, and Billie was rushed to Newcastle Hospital. A scan confirmed what they feared - Billie had suffered a stroke.
The young girl was placed in a coma and flown to Sydney Children's Hospital. Grace described the experience as surreal and horrific, feeling shocked and unaware that children could have strokes. A week later, Billie was brought out of her coma, but the road to recovery was challenging. She couldn't talk and had left-side paralysis. After three months of intensive rehabilitation, learning to walk again, Billie took her first steps, a moment her mother will cherish forever.
Two years on, Billie still lives with weakness on the left side of her body, known as hemiplegia. But she hasn't let it hold her back. Now 9 years old, Billie is excelling in Grade 3 at school, playing tennis, and enjoying swimming. Her mother, Grace, is incredibly proud of her progress, describing her as a ray of sunshine who loves life and isn't stopped by her challenges.
The Reality of Childhood Strokes
Childhood strokes are more common than many realize, ranking among the top ten causes of death in children. Annually, around 120 babies and 400 children experience a stroke, and approximately half of all survivors face long-term impairments. Dr. Lisa Murphy, CEO of the Stroke Foundation, emphasizes that most Australians are unaware that babies and children can have strokes.
"Stroke doesn't discriminate; it affects people of all ages, including the youngest and most vulnerable members of our community. The best thing parents can do is be aware and learn to recognize the symptoms and signs of stroke." Dr. Murphy says. As part of Childhood Stroke Awareness Week (March 2-8), the Stroke Foundation is urging families and health professionals to educate themselves on the impact of strokes on infants and children.
"Stroke presents itself in various ways in children, but symptoms can include seizures and extreme sleepiness in babies, and in older children, weakness or numbness in the face, arm, or leg, difficulty talking or swallowing, dizziness, and severe or unusual headaches," Dr. Murphy explains. Recognizing these signs is crucial for early intervention and treatment.
