Breaking News: Quebec Premier François Legault Steps Down! After a dominant run shaping Quebec politics, François Legault has announced his resignation, leaving many to wonder what's next. Legault, who founded the CAQ, will remain in office until his successor is chosen. He made the announcement during a Wednesday morning news conference. He acknowledged the desire for change among Quebecers, signaling the end of his tenure.
But here's where it gets controversial... The CAQ will have mere months to rally and select a new leader. This transition period is crucial, and the pressure is on.
Legault's time as premier, which began in 2018, and his leadership of the CAQ since 2011, has been marked by significant moments and challenges. Before his resignation, Legault had repeatedly vowed to stay on as leader, despite internal party friction and speculation about his future.
The premier faced setbacks, including the departures of ministers Lionel Carmant and Christian Dubé, due to disagreements over government policies. Several Members of the National Assembly (MNAs) also left the CAQ, adding to the political uncertainty.
And this is the part most people miss... The recent Pallas Data poll, conducted in early January, revealed that the premier and his party were polling at a mere 10% among voters. More than half of those surveyed had a very unfavorable opinion of the party leader. The Parti Québécois (PQ) has been leading in the polls and has even gained seats in by-elections. The Quebec Liberal Party is also searching for a new permanent leader.
Before entering politics, Legault co-founded the Canadian airline Air Transat. He served as an MNA from 1998 to 2009 under former premiers Lucien Bouchard and Bernard Landry with the Parti Québécois. His nationalist party transformed Quebec politics, becoming the first since 1970 to win an election other than the Liberals or the separatist PQ.
Legault highlighted his pride in Quebec's economic growth, which has outpaced Ontario's. He also championed the province's energy sector.
Controversy alert! However, his legacy isn't without its challenges. The government invested heavily in the Northvolt battery plant project, but the province later lost hundreds of millions of dollars when Northvolt's parent company declared bankruptcy.
During his resignation speech, Legault emphasized his government's push for secularism, including banning religious symbols for some public employees. He also mentioned his government's language law, known as Bill 96, as a significant step in the province's history. He also reflected on the COVID-19 pandemic, calling it a moment of pride and solidarity.
