Red Bull Engine Chief: 2026 F1 Performance Differentiator is on the Aero Side (2026)

Get ready for a thrilling new chapter in Formula 1! As we stand on the brink of a fresh era, the burning question on everyone's lips is: what will set the teams apart and determine the pecking order this season?

While the internal combustion engine (ICE) is expected to play a significant role, there's a twist in the tale. Ben Hodgkinson, the director of Red Bull Ford Powertrains, believes that the aerodynamic side of the regulations could be the real game-changer.

Hodgkinson acknowledges that the ICE will likely be a key differentiator for the new power units, especially with the increased electrical power. However, he warns us not to underestimate the impact of aerodynamics.

"Within the power unit space, the ICE might be the biggest factor," Hodgkinson explains. "But on the ERS side, everyone will be pushing for maximum efficiency with their power electronics and motors. The real differences could lie in the ICE, and that's where our fuel partner, ExxonMobil, comes into play. They've been instrumental in maximizing our ICE performance."

But here's where it gets interesting... Hodgkinson doesn't expect a repeat of the 2014 season, where Mercedes dominated with their power unit. He believes the differences between power units will be less pronounced this time around.

"The power units and ICEs are very similar to what we've seen before," he says. "With sustainable fuels, the loss of the MGU-H, and other regulatory tweaks, we've deliberately reset combustion technology, but it's not a complete overhaul."

The regulations have become more accessible, which is great news for newcomers like Audi. Hodgkinson points out that they're not developing a completely new configuration; it's still a V6 engine with fundamental similarities.

"The lowering of compression ratios and boost limits has actually reduced the stress on parts, making it a bit easier," he adds. "So, the power units could be more similar than we think. Maybe it's because we're technically newcomers as Red Bull Powertrains, even though many of my staff have extensive F1 experience. Maybe that's why I feel less like a newcomer and more confident about the power units."

But Hodgkinson believes there's a bigger risk on the aero side. The FIA expects differences here too, but Hodgkinson thinks aerodynamics could be a major performance differentiator in 2026.

"Aerodynamics isn't my forte, so take this with a pinch of salt," he laughs. "But with a complete reset for the entire car, not just the power units, there should be differences. We'll have to wait and see what those are."

So, will aerodynamics be the secret weapon in this new era of Formula 1? Only time will tell. What are your thoughts? Do you agree with Hodgkinson's assessment? Let us know in the comments below!
