The ACES survey, a detailed exploration of cold molecular gas, has revealed a diverse range of molecules, from simple silicon monoxide to complex organics like methanol and acetone. These molecules flow along filaments, feeding star formation.

"What makes this particularly fascinating is the complexity," Barnes adds. "The interplay of gas, dust, and black holes creates a unique environment, a true testbed for our theories of star formation."

The team's anticipation for detail was high, but the final mosaic surpassed all expectations. Katharina Immer, an ALMA astronomer at ESO, says, "The richness and complexity are a testament to the power of ALMA."

And the journey has only just begun. Upcoming upgrades to ALMA and the Extremely Large Telescope will push the boundaries further, allowing scientists to explore this region with even greater clarity.

"We will delve deeper, resolving finer structures and tracing the intricate dance of chemistry and physics," Barnes concludes.
